The historic railroad and iron-mining town at the center of the valley, home to Fort Davidson and the gateway to the region's Civil War history.
Pilot Knob is the historic railroad and iron-mining town at the geographic center of the Arcadia Valley. Named for the prominent knob that rises just east of town, Pilot Knob was once a busy iron-ore shipping point on the Iron Mountain Railroad.
Today it's a quiet small town best known as the home of Fort Davidson and the Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site. The town makes a natural base for exploring the valley — it's just minutes from Elephant Rocks, the shut-ins, and Taum Sauk, with dining and lodging clustered along the main highway.
