Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park

Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park

A geologic wonder where the East Fork of the Black River tumbles through billion-year-old volcanic rock, forming chutes, pools, and natural waterslides — Missouri's most beloved swimming hole.

Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park is the Arcadia Valley's signature natural attraction. A "shut-in" is a place where a river is confined — or "shut in" — by ancient rock, and here the East Fork of the Black River cascades through a maze of billion-year-old rhyolite, creating chutes, plunge pools, and smooth natural waterslides. It's widely considered the best swimming hole in Missouri.

A wheelchair-accessible boardwalk leads to overlooks above the shut-ins, and the park's rugged backcountry offers hiking through the St. Francois Mountains, camping, and picnicking. Water levels vary with the season — midsummer is ideal for splashing, while spring brings higher, faster water.

Arrive early on summer weekends, as the park is popular and can reach capacity. Bring water shoes; the rocks are smooth but slick, and the current in the chutes is stronger than it looks.
