A quiet natural area of ancient volcanic rock and rhyolite columns, with a short hike to a panoramic sunset overlook of the Ozarks.
Hughes Mountain Natural Area is a quiet, off-the-beaten-path preserve about half an hour from the valley, known for its ancient volcanic rock formations and striking rhyolite columns. A short hike climbs to a high glade with a sweeping, 360-degree overlook of the surrounding Ozark hills — one of the best sunset views in the region.
It's uncrowded and wild, a wonderful contrast to the busier state parks, and an easy detour on a day exploring the St. Francois Mountains.
